Welcome to Maryland Hunger Solutions!

Maryland Hunger Solutions, an initiative of the Food Research and Action Center, is dedicated to the goal of ending hunger and improving health and well-being across the state. We focus on improving the federal nutrition programs at the state and local level to ensure that everyone has access to adequate healthy food every day. We work to increase participation in the federal nutrition programs and to ensure that eligible Marylanders receive the benefits to which they are entitled. Particularly during these difficult economic times, these programs are critical to the well-being of vulnerable Marylanders. Not only do these programs alleviate hunger, they help move individuals and families out of poverty.

Through the outstanding work of our dedicated staff, Maryland Hunger Solutions and the federal nutrition programs are making a real difference for low-income families in Maryland. The Food Supplement Program (formerly known as food stamps) is helping more than a half million Marylanders put food on the table. The child nutrition programs -- school meals, afterschool snacks and meals and summer food – are making sure that children have access to healthy food during the school day and when school is out. And WIC is helping newborns, toddlers, and pregnant and new moms get the nutrition they need.

We believe that hunger can be eliminated. As you visit our website, I hope you find it to be a useful source of information about hunger in Maryland and what we can do together to end it. It can be as simple as asking your child’s school if they participate in the School Breakfast or Afterschool Meal Program, asking your grocer to post information about the Food Supplement Program or WIC, or participating in our annual Food Stamp Challenge. Whatever step you decide to take, our staff is available to answer your questions and to help get you started. We can provide resources including local data, reports on participation, guides about the basics of the programs, and outreach materials to raise awareness. And we can come to you: We’re available to do presentations and to meet with stakeholders in your community as part of our effort to eradicate hunger.

Thank you for visiting Maryland Hunger Solutions. Together, we can end hunger in Maryland.

Best regards,

Cathy Demeroto
