Baltimore, Md. – February 23, 2015 – More than 800,000 students from every school district in Maryland will join Maryland Hunger Solutions in Hear the Maryland Crunch, a state-wide, synchronized bite into an apple to raise awareness about the importance of school breakfast in the fight against childhood hunger, taking place on Maryland Day, Wednesday, March 25, 2015.
“We are thrilled to see the momentum around school breakfast building. This support will culminate when thousands of students, teachers and partners throughout the state, including the entire Maryland Congressional delegation, join together at 9:15am, just after the morning school bell, to Hear the Maryland Crunch,” said Michael J. Wilson, director of Maryland Hunger Solutions. “If we are serious about improving the health and the lives of Marylanders – especially children – then improving participation in school breakfast is the place to start.”
The School Breakfast Program reaches 56.5 low-income students in Maryland for every 100 students that receive school lunch, according to the Maryland Hunger Solutions recent report entitled, “Reducing Childhood Hunger with the School Breakfast Program: Maryland’s Report Card.” Increasing the number of children who eat school breakfast would help end childhood hunger, as well as boost learning and test scores, improve attendance and student behavior, and improve overall student health.
One way to increase participation is for more schools to adopt alternative serving models for breakfast, such as Breakfast in the Classroom. Such programs erase barriers to participation to make breakfast part of the school day by moving it out of the cafeteria and into the classroom. Maryland Hunger Solutions has been working with schools across the state to help them start up such programs, and will continue to support and encourage more schools to follow this successful path.
Maryland Hunger Solutions invites all Marylanders to Hear the Maryland Crunch on Wednesday, March 25th. At 9:15am, join us as we crunch into an apple to spread the message that every child in Maryland should have access to a healthy breakfast every day.
Beginning February 25, here are three easy ways you can participate:
