Gaithersburg, Md., November 6, 2025 – Maryland Hunger Solutions commends Gov. Wes Moore and the state of Maryland for stepping up to ensure more than 680,000 residents—including approximately 270,000 children and 120,000 older adults—who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can continue to put on the table during November as the government shutdown continues. This decisive action, allocating $62 million in state funds, puts families first, shielding them from deepening hardship.

Access to food is a fundamental right, not a privilege, and ensuring families, older adults, children, and veterans can access the nutrition they need must always be a top priority. Families should not go hungry because of political gridlock.

Maryland ranks 28th nationally in SNAP participation, with 11 percent of state residents currently receiving benefits and households with children experiencing even higher participation rates. Yet, as federal inaction persists, the responsibility for protecting families from hunger should not fall solely to states.

Maryland Hunger Solutions stands with every SNAP participant and calls for immediate federal action to fully fund November SNAP benefits. There is no excuse that justifies the administration delaying the release of benefits and then choosing not to utilize every resource to make sure no one in this country goes hungry.
